Question by Alex K: I just got a ticket for not having motorcycle insurance in Florida?
It’s under state statue 316.646(1)

I do WANT insurance, but right now it’s a bit difficult for me to afford, but I thought that I wasn’t legally required to have it, can somebody please help me clear this up, I don’t really feel like paying $ 116 for no reason.
I cited the TICKET. If I completely understood the statue, I wouldn’t have had to come here
oh yeah, and i was wearing a helmet

Well, it actually is illegal if you get caught without it. Thus why when you get pulled over the cops ask you for you license, registration, and in some cases insurance info.

I thought in Florida, you only needed insurance if you didn’t wear a helmet

You do need insurance. Any motor vehicle that is driven on the road needs insurance. Why would you think that a motorcycle doesn’t need insurance?

You need a $ 10,000 policy if you choose not to wear a helmet. Call your police department or court house and inquire as to what the statute actually covers. I have State Farm insurance on my trucks, but they stated they did not sell motorcycle insurance (in Florida), but collision was covered under my truck policy.
